01

The challenge

Making space to check in. Mental health is becoming an increasingly important part of everyday life. Mind reports that 1 in 4 people in England experience a mental health problem each year, while common mental health problems such as anxiety and depression are becoming more prevalent. But looking after your mental health doesn't always mean needing a long-term programme or formal intervention. Sometimes, the first step is simply recognising how you're feeling and taking a moment to reset. The challenge was to create an experience that could support that moment without adding complexity, pressure or another task to someone's day.

02

The solution

A simple moment to pause. Breathe was designed around a straightforward idea: give people an easy way to stop, check in with themselves and take a few intentional breaths. The experience uses a calm visual breathing rhythm to guide the user without overwhelming them with information or instructions. There are no scores to chase, streaks to maintain or complicated programmes to complete. The interface stays deliberately quiet, allowing the breathing exercise to remain the focus. Whether someone is feeling stressed, struggling to concentrate, preparing for something difficult or simply needs a moment during the day, the experience provides a low-friction way to pause and reset.

03

The result

A tool for everyday mental wellbeing. Breathe turns a simple breathing exercise into an accessible digital experience that encourages people to take a moment for themselves. The product isn't designed to replace professional mental health support. Instead, it sits earlier in the journey, helping make everyday self-care feel more approachable and easier to practise. The result is a focused experience built around one simple behaviour: notice how you're feeling, pause and breathe. With mental health needs continuing to rise and many people facing long waits for support, small, accessible tools that encourage people to engage with their wellbeing can play a useful role alongside wider support. Mind reports that more than 2.2 million people were in contact with NHS mental health services in January 2026, highlighting the continuing scale of demand.
